President Obama presented Israeli President Shimon Peres with the 2012 Presidential Medal of Freedom on June 13th, 2012. “President Shimon Peres, the ninth President of Israel, is an ardent advocate for Israel’s security and for peace”. “Through his life and work, he has strengthened the unbreakable bonds between Israel and the United States” The White House said. President Shimon Peres was awarded the medal in May but was not able to attend the White House medal ceremony. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is an award bestowed by the President of the United States. It recognizes those individuals who have made “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

President Obama will award President Shimon Peres of Israel the Presidential Medal of Freedom during a special dinner on Wednesday, June 13th.. First Lady Michelle Obama will also attend the dinner. The Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor bestowed by a US President.

Irvine joined Mrs. Obama to film the show in Washington, DC in early March, and the air date is perfectly timed to build heat after the May 29th publication of Mrs. Obama’s forthcoming book about the White House Kitchen Garden, American Grown.
Irvine usually swoops in to retool a struggling restaurant for the popular series, but for the First Lady he did a rebuild of the community center run by Washington, DC non-profit Horton’s Kids.

Democrat Ron Barber, Gabrielle Giffords’ former district director, won the special election Tuesday to succeed his former boss in Arizona’s 8th District, holding the open House seat for his party and earning a leg up in the race for a full term.
Barber led Republican Jesse Kelly, a Marine veteran and Giffords’ 2010 challenger, 52 to 45 percent in the Tucson-area district.
The district leans Republican but remains highly competitive territory– prompting some national interest from outside groups as well as party strategists in Washington. Republicans attempted to capitalize on the president and Obamacare’s low approval numbers, tying Barber to each, while Barber cast Kelly as an opponent of Social Security.
“Ron Barber’s strong campaign made this a referendum on the Republican plans to drastically cut Medicare and privatize Social Security, while giving massive tax breaks to millionaires, Big Oil and corporations that ship jobs overseas,” Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel said in a statement. “The Republican plan lost.”

President Obama has been focused on making refinancing simpler for responsible homeowners since he took office, and in Nevada, where the President visted Friday, refinancing applications are up 237% since last November.
It began in 2009 when the administration launched the Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP), which helped nearly 1 million homeowners save thousands of dollars. But despite that success, the benefits from HARP have been limited because of eligibility requirements and costs associated with the program.
So last October, the President announced that Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Finance Housing Agency would work with lenders to make it easier for even more mortgage holders to refinance.
And it’s having an impact: Refinancing applications have increased by 50 percent since the fall.
But the reason that President Obama is in Nevada, calling on Congress to act, is because we’ve reached the upward limit for what the Obama administration can do alone. As part of his To-Do List, he’s calling on lawmakers to cut the red tape so that responsible homeowners across the country who have been paying their mortgage on time can feel secure in their home and refinance at today’s lower rates.

Mortgage applications rose last week: MBA

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Applications for home mortgages rose last week to their highest level since 2009, an industry group said on Wednesday.
The Mortgage Bankers Association said its seasonally adjusted index of mortgage application activity, which includes both refinancing and home purchase demand, rose 18 percent in the week ended June 8.
The MBA’s seasonally adjusted index of refinancing applications rose 19.2 percent, while the gauge of loan requests for home purchases, a leading indicator of home sales, rose around 12.8 percent.
“Refinance volume increased as borrowers were able to lock in at mortgage rates below 4 percent, and purchase application volume was its highest level in over six months,” said Michael Fratantoni, MBA’s vice president of research and economics, in a statement.
The refinance share of total mortgage activity inched up to 79 percent of applications from 7 8 percent the week before.

Yesterday, during his ninth appearance before Congress regarding the “Fast and Furious” debacle (read more about that HERE), Senator John Cornyn, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee asked Attorney General Eric Holder to resign, saying he hoped President Obama would replace him…
Holder: With all due respect, senator, there is so much that is factually wrong with the premises that you started your statement with, it’s almost breathtaking in its inaccuracy, but, I’ll simply leave it at that…
If you want to talk about Fast and Furious, I’m the attorney general that put an end to the misguided tactics that were used in Fast and Furious. An attorney general whom I suppose you would hold in higher regard was briefed on these kinds of tactics in an operation called “Wide Receiver” and did nothing to stop them. Nothing. Three hundred guns, at least, “walked” in that instance.
I’m also the attorney general who called on an inspector general to look into this matter, to investigate this matter. I’m also the attorney general who made personnel changes at ATF and in the U.S. Attorneys office that was involved, have overseen the changes of processes and procedures within ATF to make sure that this doesn’t happen ever again.
So I don’t have any intention of resigning. I heard the White House press officer say yesterday that the president has absolute confidence in me. I don’t have any reason to believe that in fact is not the case.
And in terms of, you know, what is it that we have turned over to Congress in this regard, let’s put something on the record here. … We have collected data from 240 custodians, we have processed millions of electronic records, looked at over 140,000 documents, turned over 7,600 pages. Over the course of 46 separate productions, we have made available people from the department at the highest levels to be interviewed.
And I’ve also said…to the extent that all of that is not enough to satisfy the concerns… I am willing to sit down and talk about the provision of more materials. I have sent letters in that regard, the deputy attorney general has sent letters … and have not had responses. Which leads me to believe that the desire here is not for an accommodation but for a political point-making. And that is the kind of thing that, you know, you and and your side, I guess, have the ability to do if that’s what you want to do. It is the kind of thing that I think turns people off about Washington. While we have very serious problems, we still have this political gamesmanship.

THE PRESIDENT: (In progress) — these guys are also young fathers, and they’re doing a great — he’s got four kids. He’s got two. And Michelle and I have been working a lot with military families, trying to support them. When these guys are deployed sometimes, they’re leaving the family behind. I just want to make sure they get support.
And then the reason the two older gentlemen are here is, as I was mentioning, barbershops are where a lot of men go — and we want to work with them — we want to work with barbershops to figure out how we can get better information to fathers about resources that are available to them so they can find job training programs; they can find support groups for fathers. Because the more information we’re getting out there to folks about how they could take responsibility for their kids, make sure that they’re in their child’s lives, help support their mother even if they’re not living with the mother, makes a huge difference.
It turns out that with the father being involved, the kids are less likely to do drugs, they’re less likely to — girls are less likely to get pregnant. And so that message is something that we want to make sure gets out there. And barbershops are a good place to do it, so that’s where everybody hangs out — right?
Although I was teasing these guys, cutting their hair wouldn’t be that complicated. (Laughter.) You just take a — (Laughter.) I was just saying you got to give these guys a discount if they come into your barbershop because they’ll only take five minutes.
All right, guys, thank you. We’re going to eat in peace now. (Laughter.)

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Good evening, everybody. Please have a seat. On behalf of Michelle and myself, welcome to the White House on this beautiful summer evening.
The United States is fortunate to have many allies and partners around the world. Of course, one of our strongest allies, and one of our closest friends, is the State of Israel. And no individual has done so much over so many years to build our alliance and to bring our two nations closer as the leader that we honor tonight — our friend, Shimon Peres. (Applause.)
Among many special guests this evening we are especially grateful for the presence of Shimon’s children — Tzvia, Yoni and Chemi, and their families. Please rise so we can give you a big round of applause. (Applause.)
We have here someone representing a family that has given so much for peace, a voice for peace that carries on with the legacy of her father, Yitzhak Rabin — and that’s Dalia. We are grateful to have you here. (Applause.) Leaders who’ve helped ensure that the United States is a partner for peace — and in particular, I’m so pleased to see Secretary Madeleine Albright, who is here this evening. (Applause.) And one of the great moral voices of our time and an inspiration to us all — Professor Elie Wiesel. (Applause.)
The man, the life that we honor tonight is nothing short of extraordinary. Shimon took on his first assignment in
Ben-Gurion’s Haganah, during the struggle for Israeli independence in 1947, when he was still in his early 20s. He ran for President of Israel — and won — when he was 83. (Laughter.)
By the way, I should mention that I just learned that his son-in-law is also his doctor. And I asked for all his tips. (Laughter.)
Shimon has been serving his nation — and strengthening the bonds between our two nations — for some 65 years, the entire life of the State of Israel. Ben-Gurion and Meir, Begin and Rabin — these giants of Israel’s founding generation now belong to the ages. But tonight, we have the rare privilege in history — and that’s to be in the presence of a true Founding Father.
Shimon, you have never stopped serving. And in two months we’ll join our Israeli friends in marking another milestone — your 89th birthday. (Applause.)

We Can’t Wait: President Obama Signs Executive Order to Make Broadband Construction Faster and Cheaper
White House Also Announces 100-Partner “US Ignite” Broadband Initiative
Tomorrow, the President will sign an Executive Order to make broadband construction along Federal roadways and properties up to 90 percent cheaper and more efficient. Currently, the procedures for approving broadband infrastructure projects on properties controlled or managed by the Federal Government—including large tracts of land, roadways, and more than 10,000 buildings across the Nation—vary depending on which agency manages the property. The new Executive Order will ensure that agencies charged with managing Federal properties and roads take specific steps to adopt a uniform approach for allowing broadband carriers to build networks on and through those assets and speed the delivery of connectivity to communities, businesses, and schools.
“Building a nationwide broadband network will strengthen our economy and put more Americans back to work,” said President Obama. “By connecting every corner of our country to the digital age, we can help our businesses become more competitive, our students become more informed and our citizens become more engaged.”
The White House is also announcing that nearly 100 partners—including more than 25 cities as well as corporate and non-profit entities—will join with more than 60 national research universities to form a new public-private partnership called “US Ignite.” The US Ignite Partnership will create a new wave of services that take advantage of state-of-the-art, programmable broadband networks running up to 100 times faster than today’s Internet. By bringing software developers and engineers from government and industry together with representatives from communities, schools, hospitals, and other institutions that will benefit from faster and more agile broadband options, the partnership aims to speed up and increase the development of applications for advanced manufacturing, medical monitoring, emergency preparedness, and a host of other services. These applications will improve services to Americans and drive job creation, promote innovation, and create new markets for American businesses.
