      TEA PARTY AND THE RIGHT

      AlterNet / By Amanda Marcotte

5 of the Most Dangerous Delusions of the Far Right
Conservatives are outdoing themselves with the crazy on issues like climate change and abortion.

That the conservative movement is built on a bunch of misinformation, strange fantasies and outright lies has been the subject of thorough documentation, particularly in the past few decades. Conservative leaders deny inconvenient facts, make up lurid tales to justify their beliefs, and outright lie, if it suits their agenda. But these lies and myths rarely just sit in amber. They tend to evolve and get stranger and more baroque over time. Just when you think conservative misinformation can’t get any weirder, it does. Here’s four topics where conservatives are taking the lies and denialism to the next level.

      1) Climate change
      2) Abortion
      3) Gun culture
      4) Terrorism
      5) Benghazi

      The ‘anti-science party’

      05/16/14 12:45PM By Steve Benen – maddowblog

A few years ago, during the race for the Republicans’ 2012 presidential nomination, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) suggested climate science was an elaborate hoax cooked up by greedy scientists. John Weaver, the chief strategist for former Gov. John Huntsman’s campaign, responded with a sensible declaration: “We’re not going to win a national election if we become the anti-science party.”

Three years later, it’s probably too late to worry about whether the GOP is becoming the anti-science party.
In a little-noticed 2012 interview, Rep. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), the front-runner in Montana’s open 2014 Senate race, expressed support for teaching creationism in public schools.

In an interview that aired on November 2, 2012, Sally Mauk, news director for Montana Public Radio, asked Daines, who was then running for Montana’s lone House seat, whether public schools should teach creationism. Daines responded, “What the schools should teach is, as it relates to biology and science is that they have, um, there’s evolution theory, there’s creation theory, and so forth. I think we should teach students to think critically, and teach students that there are evolutionary theories, there’s intelligent-design theories, and allow the students to make up their minds. But I think those kinds of decisions should be decided at the local school board level.” He added, “Personally I’d like to teach my kids both sides of the equation there and let them come up to their own conclusion on it.”

It’s been a rough week for Republicans and their support for science. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), for example, struggled badly to defend his opposition to climate science, only to make matters worse by saying odd things about reproductive science.

And away from Capitol Hill, two GOP Senate candidates said they too have a problem with climate science, while Republicans in the Oklahoma legislature are balking at new science standards because they treat climate change as true.

    Freedom Rides

Freedom Riders were civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated southern United States in 1961 and following years to challenge the non-enforcement of the United States Supreme Court decisions Irene Morgan v. Commonwealth of Virginia (1946) and Boynton v. Virginia (1960), which ruled that segregated public buses were unconstitutional. The Southern states had ignored the rulings and the federal government did nothing to enforce them. The first Freedom Ride left Washington, D.C., on May 4, 1961, and was scheduled to arrive in New Orleans on May 17.

Boynton outlawed racial segregation in the restaurants and waiting rooms in terminals serving buses that crossed state lines. Five years prior to the Boynton ruling, the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) had issued a ruling in Sarah Keys v. Carolina Coach Company that had explicitly denounced the Plessy v. Ferguson doctrine of separate but equal in interstate bus travel. The ICC failed to enforce its ruling, and Jim Crow travel laws remained in force throughout the South.

The Freedom Riders challenged this status quo by riding interstate buses in the South in mixed racial groups to challenge local laws or customs that enforced segregation in seating. The Freedom Rides, and the violent reactions they provoked, bolstered the credibility of the American Civil Rights Movement. They called national attention to the disregard for the federal law and the local violence used to enforce segregation in the southern United States. Police arrested riders for trespassing, unlawful assembly, and violating state and local Jim Crow laws, along with other alleged offenses, but they often first let white mobs attack them without intervention.

The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) sponsored most of the subsequent Freedom Rides, but some were also organized by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). The Freedom Rides followed dramatic sit-ins against segregated lunch counters, conducted by students and youth throughout the South, and boycotts of retail establishments that maintained segregated facilities, beginning in 1960.

The Supreme Court’s decision in Boynton supported the right of interstate travelers to disregard local segregation ordinances. Southern local and state police considered the actions of the Freedom Riders as criminal and arrested them in some locations. In some localities, such as Birmingham, Alabama, the police cooperated with Ku Klux Klan chapters and other whites opposing the actions and allowed mobs to attack the riders.

Remarks by President Obama and President Guelleh of Djibouti before Bilateral Meeting

      Oval Office

      10:58 A.M. EDT

PRESIDENT OBAMA: I want to welcome President Guelleh and his delegation here today.

I had an opportunity to visit Djibouti when I was a senator, before I was elected President, and saw firsthand the importance of U.S. cooperation with Djibouti. Obviously, Camp Lemonnier is extraordinarily important not only to our work throughout the Horn of Africa but throughout the region. And we very much appreciate the hospitality that the Djiboutians provide, but we also are very appreciative of the opportunity to meet with the President here today and to deepen this relationship further.

Today we’ll be discussing a wide range of issues. In addition to our security cooperation, we’re deeply interested in working with the President around development and issues of being able to expand education and health care work that we’re already doing with the government of Djibouti. We’re extremely interested in regional issues and we want to say how much we appreciate the work that Djibouti has done through AMISOM in Somalia, an area where there have been continuing growing threats not only to the Somali people but al-Shabaab obviously has carried out operations throughout East Africa and there’s a significant presence of soldiers from Djibouti who are participating in the multinational force that has been able to push back al-Shabaab’s control over large portions of Somalia.

Services Industries in U.S. Rose to Eight-Month High in April

May 5, 2014 7:14 AM PT By Shobhana Chandra – TheHill

Service industries expanded in April at the fastest pace in eight months, a sign the biggest part of the U.S. economy will bolster growth this quarter.

The Institute for Supply Management’s non-manufacturing index rose to 55.2, higher than projected, from the prior month’s 53.1, the Tempe, Arizona-based group’s report showed today. Readings above 50 indicate expansion. The median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for 54 in the gauge for services, which account for almost 90 percent of the economy.

The gain, combined with the strongest pace of manufacturing in four months, indicates growth is rebounding after a weak first quarter. Employers boosted payrolls in April by the most in two years and the jobless rate dropped to the lowest level since 2008, laying the ground for a pickup in consumer spending that will benefit companies such as United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS)

“Things are getting better,” Robert Stein, deputy chief economist at First Trust Portfolios LP in Wheaton, Illinois, said before the report. “Among the top line numbers, we’re seeing a re-acceleration of the economy. Consumers are in excellent shape” and “spending is going to continue to grow this quarter.”

Obama Sets Up Devilish Trap For The GOP On Immigration Reform

MAY 5, 2014, 11:25 AM EDT SAHIL KAPUR – tpm

Barack Obama wants to be the president who signs comprehensive immigration reform into law. But in the absence of congressional action he has signaled he’ll act on his own and slow deportations for people living in the country illegally without criminal records.

As the Republican-led House stonewalls legislative action, insisting the president can’t be trusted to enforce the law, Obama’s pivot to executive action sets a dangerous political trap for the GOP. They’ll feel compelled to oppose his steps to make life easier for undocumented immigrants — they’re already begun to do just that. But that will further alienate their party with Hispanics, the country’s fastest-growing demographic, for whom immigration reform is a high priority.

Even worse, if Obama acts on his own Republicans won’t share in any of the credit. Democrats will reap political gains with the Latinos — whom GOP strategists insist the party must win over to stay competitive on the presidential stage — in 2016 and beyond while Republicans take the side of those calling for deporting unauthorized immigrants.

“When Republicans say the President must do more to enforce the law, we hear it as a lame excuse for their own inaction and a call for the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants,” said Frank Sharry, who runs the pro-reform group America’s Voice. “Needless to say, the hole the GOP has dug itself with Latino, Asian American, and immigrant voters gets deeper every time they say it.”

Remarks by the First Lady at Ribbon Cutting of the Anna Wintour Costume Center

      The Metropolitan Museum of Art
      New York, New York

      11:03 A.M. EDT

MRS. OBAMA: Thank you. (Applause.) Thank you so much. Thank you, all. Please.

Good afternoon. It is truly a pleasure to be here with all of you today as we inaugurate this brand new center in honor of our friend, Anna Wintour.

I want to start by thanking Tom for that very brief introduction — it’s to the point — but more importantly, for his outstanding leadership here at the Met. I also want to acknowledge all of the elected officials joining us today. And I want thank Aerin Lauder, and Harold Koda, and everyone else whose generosity and creativity and hard work have made this day possible, especially Anna herself.

Now, I know that Anna hates being the center of attention, so this all is probably killing her — but we love it. But the truth is, I’m here today because of Anna. I’m here because I have such respect and admiration for this — women who I am proud to call my friend. And I’m here because I am so impressed by Anna’s contributions not just to the fashion industry, but to the many causes she shares and cares about, particularly this great American museum.

Thanks to Anna and so many other dedicated individuals, the Met will be opening up the world of fashion like never before. And that’s really the mission of this new space –- to show that fashion isn’t an exclusive club for the few who can attend a runway show or shop at certain stores. This Center is for anyone who is curious about fashion and how it impacts our culture and our history.

And we know that that curiosity is out there. Previous exhibits at the Costume Institute have drawn hundreds of thousands of visitors, many of them students. And as we cut this ribbon today, that’s really who I’m thinking about. I’m thinking about all of the young people who will find their way to this new space.

Now, maybe they’ll come initially because they love clothes and they love shopping, but then they’ll learn that fashion isn’t just about what we wear but that fashion is also a business, it is an art; it’s a career that involves science, engineering, accounting, marketing and so much more.

FACT SHEET: Marking the Administration’s Progress on Mental Health

On Monday, May 5, Vice President Biden is delivering remarks to the American Psychiatric Association’s Annual Meeting in order to highlight the actions the Administration has taken to break down the barriers preventing people from getting help for mental illnesses.

Nearly one in five American adults experience a mental illness in any given year. Less than half received mental health services. And only about half of children with mental problems receive treatment. The top three reasons given for not receiving help are cost, belief they could handle the problem without treatment, and that they did not know where to go for services.

We must do everything we can to increase access to mental health services and expand our understanding of the human brain so that we may develop more effective treatments. Most recently, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the applications for the new and expanded mental health initiatives first proposed in the President and Vice President’s comprehensive gun violence reduction package. $115 million was secured in the Fiscal Year 2014 omnibus appropriations bill for these initiatives, which will train more mental health professionals to serve in our communities, help educators recognize the early signs of mental health problems and refer young people to appropriate help when needed, and support innovative state-based approaches to making sure young people ages 16 to 25 who are at high risk for mental illness don’t fall through the cracks of our mental health system. All of the applications for these grants are now available at grants.gov.

Remarks by the President at Cinco de Mayo Reception

      East Room

      5:46 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Hello, everybody! (Applause.) Bienvenidos a la Casa Blanca! (Applause.) This is a rowdy crowd, I can tell. (Laughter.) They’re ready to party. (Applause.)

      AUDIENCE MEMBER: Love the margaritas.

THE PRESIDENT: The margaritas I hear are quite good. (Applause.) Be careful, though, they’ll sneak up on you. (Laughter.)

Well, thank you for joining our Cinco de Mayo celebration. It is wonderful to have so many Latinos and Latinas — (applause) — and people who wish they were Latino or Latina. (Laughter.) A lot of honorary Latinos and Latinas. On Cinco de Mayo, todos somos Latinos! (Applause and laughter.)

I’m just going to say a few words, and then we get back to the fiesta. No Cinco de Mayo would be complete without great food and great music. So I want to thank our guest chefs, my good friend, José Andrés — (applause) — Pati Jinich is here as well. (Applause.) Our musicians — members of the Georgetown University Orchestra and our mariachis, Los Gallos Negros. (Applause.)

I’m honored to welcome our friends from other parts of the Americas. We’ve got Mexico’s Undersecretary of North America, Sergio Alcocer, is here. The Ambassador to the United States, Eduardo Medina-Mora, is here as well. Give them a big round of applause. (Applause.) Peru’s Ambassador to the U.S., Harold Forsyth, is here. (Applause.) I also want to welcome all the members of Congress who are here today, including members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus — and its outstanding Chairman, Rubén Hinojosa, is here. (Applause.) And as always, it’s great to see Hispanic Americans from across my administration, whose contributions every single day make me proud.

Cinco de Mayo marks a great moment in Mexican history — one that ended up shaping the United States as well. One hundred and fifty-two years ago, a band of Mexican patriots in the town of Puebla faced an invasion by Napoleon III’s troops. The French side was bigger, it was better trained and better armed. But the Mexicans grabbed whatever weapons they could and fought with all their might, and they won the battle. (Applause.) A few years later — thanks to the bravery and tenacity of the Mexican people, with support of the United States — the occupation came to an end.

And had the opposite happened, our nations would look very different today. Our friendship with Mexico has had an enormous influence on our history and our culture and our economy. Today, our governments work together on everything from stopping crime to promoting trade to protecting our environment. And millions of Americans are connected to Mexico through ties of friendship and language and family — and they make vital contributions to our nation every single day. So today, we remember with gratitude those brave fighters who triumphed in Puebla all those years ago, and the generations of Mexicans and Americans who’ve sustained and strengthened us ever since. (Applause.)
