The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA or Air Force) is a military academy for officer candidates for the United States Air Force. Its campus is located immediately north of Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. The Academy’s stated mission is “to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation.” It is the youngest of the five United States service academies, having graduated its first class in 1959. Graduates of the Academy’s four-year program receive a Bachelor of Science degree, and are commissioned as second lieutenants in the United States Air Force.

Candidates for admission are judged on their academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, athletics and character. To gain admission, candidates must also pass a fitness test, undergo a thorough medical examination, and secure a nomination, which usually comes from the member of Congress in the candidate’s home district. Recent incoming classes have had about 1,200 cadets; historically just under 1,000 of those will graduate. Tuition along with room and board are all paid for by the U.S. government. Cadets receive a monthly stipend, but incur a commitment to serve a number of years of military service after graduation.

  3. Thanks! I am naturally very shy but in 2010 when I witnessed the amount of insults and lies repeating on the main stream media and trolling on the OFA site I thought that I HAD to do SOMETHING so I created this blog. The blog’s purpose is to help spread the word about all the good things that our First Family does just like your blog!

Remarks by the President at the United States Military Academy Commencement Ceremony

      U.S. Military Academy-West Point
      West Point, New York

      10:22 A.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you. (Applause.) Thank you so much. Thank you. And thank you, General Caslen, for that introduction. To General Trainor, General Clarke, the faculty and staff at West Point — you have been outstanding stewards of this proud institution and outstanding mentors for the newest officers in the United States Army. I’d like to acknowledge the Army’s leadership — General McHugh — Secretary McHugh, General Odierno, as well as Senator Jack Reed, who is here, and a proud graduate of West Point himself.

To the class of 2014, I congratulate you on taking your place on the Long Gray Line. Among you is the first all-female command team — Erin Mauldin and Austen Boroff. In Calla Glavin, you have a Rhodes Scholar. And Josh Herbeck proves that West Point accuracy extends beyond the three-point line. To the entire class, let me reassure you in these final hours at West Point: As Commander-in-Chief, I hereby absolve all cadets who are on restriction for minor conduct offenses. (Laughter and applause.) Let me just say that nobody ever did that for me when I was in school. (Laughter.)

I know you join me in extending a word of thanks to your families. Joe DeMoss, whose son James is graduating, spoke for a whole lot of parents when he wrote me a letter about the sacrifices you’ve made. “Deep inside,” he wrote, “we want to explode with pride at what they are committing to do in the service of our country.” Like several graduates, James is a combat veteran. And I would ask all of us here today to stand and pay tribute — not only to the veterans among us, but to the more than 2.5 million Americans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as their families. (Applause.)

This is a particularly useful time for America to reflect on those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom, a few days after Memorial Day. You are the first class to graduate since 9/11 who may not be sent into combat in Iraq or Afghanistan. (Applause.) When I first spoke at West Point in 2009, we still had more than 100,000 troops in Iraq. We were preparing to surge in Afghanistan. Our counterterrorism efforts were focused on al Qaeda’s core leadership — those who had carried out the 9/11 attacks. And our nation was just beginning a long climb out of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Four and a half years later, as you graduate, the landscape has changed. We have removed our troops from Iraq. We are winding down our war in Afghanistan. Al Qaeda’s leadership on the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan has been decimated, and Osama bin Laden is no more. (Applause.) And through it all, we’ve refocused our investments in what has always been a key source of American strength: a growing economy that can provide opportunity for everybody who’s willing to work hard and take responsibility here at home.

Fact Sheet: The Administration’s Fiscal Year 2015 Overseas Contingency Operations Request

The Administration is currently finalizing the Department of Defense portion of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2015 Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) request consistent with the President’s decision on troop levels in Afghanistan. This request will include funding for the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan and DOD’s supporting presence in the broader region in FY 2015, and it will reflect a continued downward trajectory of war-related spending.

The request will fully support the Administration’s plan for Afghanistan. In FY 2015, this includes funding for the U.S. advisory and counterterrorism mission, support for our NATO allies in Afghanistan, and an increasingly consolidated U.S. military presence described by the President in his May 27 remarks in the Rose Garden. It also includes continued material and financial assistance to the Afghan National Security Forces.

In addition, OCO funding in FY 2015 will continue to support a significant portion of our military presence in the region, from which DOD supports the mission in Afghanistan and other important missions. As the President will state in his West Point speech today, this year’s OCO request will also include transition funding to support our ability to enable partners to counter terrorism globally.

  5. Harnessing the Power of Data, Technology, and Innovation for a Clean Energy Economy

Secretary Ernest Moniz, John P. Holdren May 28, 2014 09:46 AM EDT

Today, the White House, the Energy Department, and the General Services Administration are teaming up to host an Energy Datapalooza, highlighting important new steps in the public and private sectors to leverage data and innovation in ways that promote a clean energy economy in America.

Advances in technology are making it easier for consumers and businesses across the nation to better understand how they are using and saving energy. Empowering citizens with information about their energy usage can help them make smart choices that cut energy waste, cut down energy bills, and preserve our environment.

The federal government has an important role to play in unleashing energy-related data and catalyzing innovation to support these savings. That is why the Obama Administration has taken unprecedented steps to make open government data more available to citizens, companies, and innovators — including by launching both an Energy Data Initiative and a Climate Data Initiative.

In addition, in 2011, the Administration launched the Green Button Initiative to provide families and businesses with easy and secure access to their own energy-usage information. And today, the Obama Administration is announcing a number of new steps to continue this momentum, including: a successful federal pilot applying the Green Button to help building managers achieve greater efficiencies; and new or expanded data resources and tools in the areas of geothermal, solar, hydropower, bio energy, and buildings.

FACT SHEET: Harnessing the Power of Data for a Clean, Secure, and Reliable Energy Future

“We are blessed when it comes to energy, but we’re much more blessed when it comes to the innovation and the dynamism and the creativity of our economy.”
      – President Barack Obama, May 9, 2014

President Obama’s all-of-the-above energy strategy recognizes that we need to deploy American assets, innovation, and technology in order to safely and responsibly develop more energy here at home and be a leader in the global energy economy. This means tapping into every ounce of America’s creativity and ingenuity to catalyze innovations that provide consumers with choices to reduce costs, save energy, and protect the environment.

This approach calls for all hands on deck—including private-sector entrepreneurs, technologists, and innovators who are critical to building the tools, services, and infrastructure needed to support a clean energy economy. Both the public and private sectors have an important role to play in continuing our progress to develop and deploy renewable energy sources, strengthen the electric grid, drive more advanced and fuel-efficient vehicles, and cut energy waste in homes and businesses.

Since its earliest days, the Obama Administration has recognized that freely available data from the U.S. Government is an important national asset, serving as fuel for entrepreneurship, innovation, scientific discovery, and economic growth. That is why the Federal Government has taken unprecedented steps to make open data more available to citizens, companies, and innovators—including by launching both an Energy Data Initiative and a Climate Data Initiative.

The Administration has also long recognized the value of providing homes and businesses with secure access to their own energy usage data to spur innovation and enable informed choices. In 2012, the Administration launched a Green Button Initiative in partnership with the electric utility industry to provide families and business with easy and secure access to their own energy usage information. Today, over 100 million Americans have access to their own “Green Button” data — and the opportunity to use new private sector tools and services to manage or upgrade their own household or building energy performance.

To continue this momentum, today the White House, the Department of Energy, and the General Services Administration are hosting an “Energy Datapalooza” to announce new steps forward in support of clean energy innovation, and to highlight private-sector innovators who are harnessing the power of data to advance the clean energy economy.

      Key Administration steps include:

      * Anonymized building performance data for energy retrofits, financing, and policy design
      * Reducing energy costs in Federal buildings with Green Button:
      * Making solar energy more affordable with software innovation
      * Open geothermal data for scientists and industry
      * Open data on hydropower potential and other important attributes of rivers and streams across the United States
      * American Energy Data Challenge spurs innovative uses of energy data
      * New EPA tool helps state and local planners analyze impacts of energy policies

      Private-sector and other commitments include
      * Continued momentum on the Green Button Initiative
      * New industry-led effort to provide consumers and first-responders with information about power outages
      * Cities publishing open building energy performance data in a standard format to aid benchmarking and promote efficiency

  6. Obama gives Boehner one last shot at immigration

    5/28/14 08:00AM By Steve Benen – maddowblog

When President Obama asked Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson to oversee a comprehensive review of U.S. immigration policies, the point was to help give the White House options. With Congress no longer able to govern effectively, Obama wanted to know just how far he could go if he chose to act unilaterally.

In a bit of a surprise, the president has agreed to delay this review process — but only a little.

President Barack Obama won’t act to reduce deportations on his own until the end of the summer — giving Speaker John A. Boehner one more chance to vote on an immigration overhaul.

Two administration officials confirmed that the president has directed Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson to hold off on releasing the results of his review of immigration policy in the meantime.

The hope in the White House is that once Republican primary season largely wraps up on June 10, Boehner will have the political space to get something done.

It’s unclear whether House GOP leaders requested the accommodation, though under the circumstances, that seems like a safe bet.

And on the surface, the delay may even make some sense. If House Republicans are afraid to govern because their far-right base won’t tolerate compromises, it stands to reason that GOP lawmakers will feel more flexibility once the primary season has come and gone.

If the assumptions are true, and unilateral action from the president would effectively end all legislative prospects, there’s little harm in pushing off an administrative decision and giving Boehner & Co. one last chance to do what Republican leaders have failed to do in recent years: lead and govern effectively.

Everyone’s waited this long, and June 10 is just two weeks away.

But below the surface, there’s very little for reform proponents to be optimistic about.

Statement by the President on the Passing of Maya Angelou

When her friend Nelson Mandela passed away last year, Maya Angelou wrote that “No sun outlasts its sunset, but will rise again, and bring the dawn.”

Today, Michelle and I join millions around the world in remembering one of the brightest lights of our time – a brilliant writer, a fierce friend, and a truly phenomenal woman. Over the course of her remarkable life, Maya was many things – an author, poet, civil rights activist, playwright, actress, director, composer, singer and dancer. But above all, she was a storyteller – and her greatest stories were true. A childhood of suffering and abuse actually drove her to stop speaking – but the voice she found helped generations of Americans find their rainbow amidst the clouds, and inspired the rest of us to be our best selves. In fact, she inspired my own mother to name my sister Maya.

Like so many others, Michelle and I will always cherish the time we were privileged to spend with Maya. With a kind word and a strong embrace, she had the ability to remind us that we are all God’s children; that we all have something to offer. And while Maya’s day may be done, we take comfort in knowing that her song will continue, “flung up to heaven” – and we celebrate the dawn that Maya Angelou helped bring.

  8. Bill Young’s widow to run vs. David Jolly in Florida

5/28/14 By JONATHAN TOPAZ – politico

The late Florida Rep. Bill Young’s widow, who campaigned for David Jolly’s successful special election campaign this year, has announced she will run to unseat Jolly in 2016. Beverly Young, whose husband was a Republican during his more than four decades in Congress, told the Tampa Bay Times Tuesday evening she will run as a Democrat.

Democrats have failed to find a Democratic challenger to run against Jolly in the November general election for Florida’s 13th Congressional District, even though he won a narrow victory over Democrat Alex Sink in a special election earlier this year. “I am absolutely going to run against David in 2016,” Young said. “I’d do it now if I could. If I’d known that the Democrats wouldn’t put anyone up on that ballot, I’d have been there myself this time.”

Young said that she has been in considerable financial trouble since her husband’s death in October 2013. She said only two members of Congress responded to her letters for help, one of whom was House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Young said House Speaker John Boehner did not reply to multiple phone calls.

“I told them I really needed that money,” she said of delayed benefits she was owed from her husband’s death. “I was getting panicky. I told them, ‘I’m not okay.’ Bill had been in office for 43 years, it wasn’t like they didn’t know who I was. I called the speaker of the House four times. He never returned my calls. So I called Nancy Pelosi and told her, ‘I’m in trouble.’ By the end of the day, she had all the agencies calling me. She’s the only one that made that happen.”

“This country just can’t fall to lobbyists and their deceit and manipulation,” she added, in a reference to Jolly’s former job as a Washington lobbyist. “I’m not going to just sit back and have all Bill’s hard work just trashed to inside the Beltway politics. Ugh.”
