The senior class consists of 206 students. Twenty five of those seniors are part of our Low Incidence Diverse Learners program. The Case Manager determined that these students will continue their education at King next year. Because of this, we will never show 100% FAFSA completion on external metrics. However, we set an internal goal of 100% of the 181 graduating seniors completing the FAFSA.

So let me just explain, because you all know some of the best schools in the country submitted videos for this challenge. But when I saw your Scandal video, let me tell you, I was blown away. I was just blown away with — amazing. I was blown away by your creativity, but I was even more blown away by how hard you all worked to achieve your outstanding FAFSA completion rate here at KCP. In fact, as you saw, I was so impressed that I decided to send your video to the cast of the real Scandal. And they were so impressed that Shonda* Rhimes and Kerry Washington and the whole staff, they wanted to be a part of this graduation. And I want to thank Libby, because she was the only one who knew. She kept the secret. So let’s give the cast of Scandal another round of applause. Wasn’t that wonderful? (Applause.) That’s how special you all are. That is just how special you all are.

  3. President Obama To Deliver Future of Health Care Address At Catholic Health Assembly

    May 26, 2015 PRNewswire-USNewswire

President Barack Obama will address the Catholic Health Association’s 2015 annual membership Assembly on June 9 in Washington, D.C., where he will focus remarks on the future of health care and the Affordable Care Act.

“We are delighted and honored that President Obama will speak to Catholic health care leaders gathered for our 100th anniversary as an association,” said Sister Carol Keehan, CHA’s president and chief executive officer. “As long-time supporters of a health care system that works for everyone and pays special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable, we are grateful for the President’s leadership on the ACA.”

Sister Carol continued: “This important law has provided meaningful health coverage to at least 16 million people who needed and deserved it, as well as improved both the benefits and finances of Medicare and Medicaid. We look forward to the President’s comments and insights at our Assembly, and to being a continued partner in preserving and improving the ACA.”

The President’s Speech to the Catholic Health Association on Health Care in America

Today, at the invitation of the Catholic Health Association, President Obama will address their annual conference and thank them for their dedication to helping ensure all Americans have access to health care. The President will discuss how the passage of the Affordable Care Act reflects our values and the kind of country we strive to be. He will also describe how the Affordable Care Act has become part of the fabric of an improved American health care system, one where we and our children can rely on health security throughout our lives, and make the most of our opportunities as a result.

Additionally, the White House released updated data on how the Affordable Care Act is working in every state in the country. Five years after healthcare reform became a reality, more than 16 million Americans have gained coverage, and the Affordable Care Act has improved coverage for virtually everyone who already had insurance. Americans can no longer be discriminated against for having pre-existing conditions, women can’t be charged more just for being women, and there are no longer lifetime limits on the care Americans receive. And hospitals, doctors and other providers are changing the way they operate to deliver better care at lower cost.

Remarks by the President at the Catholic Health Association Conference

      Washington Marriott Wardman Park
      Washington, D.C.

      11:58 A.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you. (Applause.) Thank you so much. (Applause.) Everybody, please have a seat. Thank you so much.

Well, I don’t know whether this is appropriate, but I just told Sister Carol I love her. (Laughter.) On a big stage. It is true, though — I do. She is just wonderful. Her dedication to doing God’s work here on Earth, her commitment to serving “the least of these,” here steadiness, her strength, her steadfast voice have been an inspiration to me. We would not have gotten the Affordable Care Act done had it not been for her. I want to thank the entire Catholic Health Association for the incredible work you do. (Applause.)

And it’s true, I just love nuns, generally. (Laughter.) I’m just saying. (Laughter.)

It is an honor to join you on your 100th anniversary of bringing hope and healing to so many. I want to acknowledge Dignity Health and its CEO, Lloyd Dean — (applause) — honored by the Catholic Health Association last night for his outstanding support of our efforts to improve health care in America. He has been a great friend.

I want to thank Ascension Health, a great provider of care — that also recently raised its minimum wage. (Applause.) I want to thank Secretary Burwell and the members of Congress who are here today, because they have been obviously doing extraordinary work. (Applause.)

My first job in Chicago when I moved after college to work as a community organizer — my first job was funded by the Campaign for Human Development, an anti-poverty initiative of the Catholic Church. And my first office was at Holy Rosary Church on the South Side of Chicago, across from Palmer Park. (Applause.) You’re clapping there — she knows Holy Rosary. (Laughter.) And the task was to work with parishes and neighbors and faith and community leaders to bring low-income people together, to stitch neighborhoods together, clergy and laypeople. And the work was hard, and there were times where it was dispiriting. We had plenty of setbacks. There were times where I felt like quitting, where I wondered if the path I’d chosen was too hard.

  6. Empowering Developing Nations to Boost Their Own Climate Resilience

Brian Deese and John Holdren June 09, 2015 09:45 AM EDT

Today, at the U.S. Institute of Peace, the United States and partners from around the world are delivering on President Obama’s commitment to help empower developing nations to boost their own climate resilience.

The Climate Services for Resilient Development Partnership, initially announced by the President at the UN Climate Summit in New York last September, will provide actionable science, data, information, tools, and training to developing countries that are working to strengthen their national resilience against the impacts of climate change. The Partnership is launching with more than $34 million in financial and in-kind contributions from the U.S. government and seven other founding-partner institutions from around the world: the American Red Cross, Asian Development Bank, Esri, Google, Inter-American Development Bank, the Skoll Global Threats Fund, and the U.K. government.

  7. ‘An amazingly scandal-free administration’

    6/09/15 11:20AM By Steve Benen – maddowblog

On a recent episode of PBS’s “NewsHour,” a media panel reflected on former House Speaker Dennis Hastert’s (R) sex scandal and reflected on whether politics “attracts” people prone to abuses and misbehavior.

New York Times columnist David Brooks, a center-right pundit, highlighted a notable exception.

“I have my disagreements, say, with President Obama, but President Obama has run an amazingly scandal-free administration, not only he himself, but the people around him. He’s chosen people who have been pretty scandal-free.

“And so there are people in Washington who do set a standard of integrity, who do seem to attract people of quality.”

PBS commentator Mark Shields responded that Brooks raised “a good point,” adding, “I agree with him on this administration in particular.”

I think this is an under-appreciated point. White House scandals over the years have become so common, they’re almost expected — given the size and scope of the executive branch, allegations of misconduct are bound to be part of an administration’s tenure. The question is the severity of the scandals, not whether they’ll exist.

But Brooks is right to give President Obama and his team credit for keeping its nose clean. When my old pals at the Washington Monthly put together a list of Obama’s top 50 accomplishments, it took note of the president’s ability to avoid scandal as among its more notable achievements: Obama has “served longer than any president in decades without a scandal.”

It’s even a point of pride among insiders. David Axelrod recently boasted, “I’m proud of the fact that basically you have had an administration in this place for six years in which there hasn’t been a major scandal. And I think that says a lot about the ethical strictures of this administration.”
