Statue of Liberty – 130th Anniversary

Liberty Enlightening the World

The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World; French: La Liberté éclairant le monde) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor in New York City, in the United States. The copper statue, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, a French sculptor, was built by Gustave Eiffel and dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was a gift to the United States from the people of France.

The New Colossus by  Emma Lazarus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

  2. State of Liberty – 130th Anniversary

The Statue of Liberty is more than a monument. She is a beloved friend, a living symbol of freedom to millions around the world. These exhibits are a tribute to the people who created her, to those who built and paid for her, to the ideals she represents, and to the hopes she inspires.

    MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS

    Statue of Liberty Exhibit
The Statue of Liberty exhibit, which opened in July 1986 and is located on the second floor in the pedestal of the Statue, traces the history and symbolism of the Statue of Liberty through museum objects, photographs, prints, videos and oral histories. In addition to historical artifacts and descriptive text, full scale replicas of the Statue’s face and foot are also on display. The main historical sections include: From Idea to Image, Fabricating the Statue, Stretching Technology, Fundraising in France, The Pedestal, Fundraising in America, and Complete at Last. The next area focuses on the symbolism of Liberty with sections titled Mother of Exiles, Becoming the Statue of America, Century of Souvenirs, The Image Exploited and The Statue in Popular Culture.

    The Torch Exhibit
The Torch Exhibit includes the original 1886 torch and much altered flame in the lobby. On the second floor balcony overlooking this torch is a display on the history of the torch and flame, explaining the various alterations through diagrams, photographs, drawings and cartoons.

    The “New Colossus”
The famous sonnet written by Emma Lazarus in 1883. A bronze plaque, dedicated in memory of Emma Lazarus’ contribution to the completion of the Statue’s pedestal, has been affixed to the inner walls of the pedestal since the early 1900’s. This plaque, currently located in the Statue of Liberty exhibit, has come to symbolize the statue’s universal message of hope and freedom for immigrants coming to America and people seeking freedom around the world.

  4. US economic growth accelerates to 2.9% in 3rd quarter (Fastest pace in two years)

    October 28, 2016 AFP

Washington (AFP) – US economic growth accelerated to a 2.9 percent annual rate in the third quarter, boosted by a big jump in exports and solid consumer spending, the Commerce Department reported Friday.

Coming just 11 days before the presidential election in which the economy has been a major issue, the GDP data showed the strongest growth in two years, and was better than the consensus forecast of 2.5 percent.

Export growth of 10 percent in the July-September period drove the expansion, and also was the strongest pace in two years.

Many analysts revised their forecasts upwards this week, to as high as 3.0 percent, especially following the release of advance trade data Wednesday.

In this initial estimate of gross domestic product, the Commerce Department also credited personal consumption for the positive result. Spending rose 2.1 percent in the period, though just half the rate of the prior quarter.

  7. Supreme Court to Hear Gavin Grimm Case; Huge Implications for Trans Students

OCTOBER 28 2016 BY TRUDY RING – TheAdvocate

The U.S. Supreme Court announced Friday it will hear a school board’s appeal of a lower court decision affirming transgender students’ access to facilities appropriate for their gender identity — and if it lets that decision stand, it will be a major victory for trans students in several states.

The attorneys for Gavin Grimm, a transgender boy who attends Gloucester High School in Virginia, would have preferred that the high court not take up the case, as that would have meant the earlier decision stood and could go into effect immediately.

The American Civil Liberties Union and its Virginia affiliate sued the Gloucester County School Board in 2015 because of a policy requiring trans students to use only single-stall restrooms. The board adopted the policy in December 2014, when Grimm was in 10th grade, even though he had been using the boys’ restroom for nearly two months.

“Since the school board passed this policy I feel singled out and humiliated every time I need to use the restroom,” Grimm said in an ACLU press release announcing his suit. The ACLU argued that the policy violates the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and Title IX of the U.S. Education Amendments of 1972, a federal law prohibiting sex discrimination by schools. The federal Department of Education and Department of Justice have held that sex discrimination includes discrimination based on gender identity.

  11. Weekly Address: Achieving the Mission of the Cancer Moonshot

Remarks of Vice President Joe Biden as Prepared for Delivery
    Weekly Address
    The White House

    October 29, 2016

    Hi everybody, Joe Biden here.

I delivered a report to President Obama laying out how far we’ve come since he put me in charge of the Cancer Moonshot back in January—and a real vision of where we need to go in the immediate future to: do in five years what would otherwise take ten; inject a sense of urgency into the fight against cancer; and change the culture and reimagine our system to win.

When President Nixon declared war on cancer in 1971, he had no army, no resources, and no clear strategy to win. But after 45 years of progress, funding research, training scientists and physicians, and treating millions of patients—we now have the army. We now have powerful new tools. And with this Moonshot, we now have a clear strategy for the road ahead. It matters because there’s a consensus that we’re at an inflection point—with science, medicine, and technology advancing faster than ever and offering real promise. But we can’t play by the rules of 1971—in 2016.

Just five years ago, immunotherapy—using the immune system to kill cancer cells while protecting healthy ones—wasn’t taken seriously. Now it is and it’s offering real hope. Decades of research has accumulated huge amounts of data—but it’s not shared, it’s hard to understand, and often not accessible to researchers and the public. But now we’re in the position to break down silos to change that.
